It’s normal that people have a secret garden, which doesn’t want to be discovered or hollowed out. That garden only opens to its master, who plants one’s secrets into the garden. Those secrets may be not only shameful things but may also include the sweet or sorrowful memories. It’s easy to understand why people don’t want other people to hollow out secrets, and why people would be angry when their secrets are known.
However, like the garden has its own square measure, the quantity of the plant is limited; people cannot keep all secrets into one’s mind always, because it will be a heavy burden for a person. Generally, we want to vent our affection and talk to someone to mitigate the burden, we won’t talk to our friends usually, because we are worry about our “friends” may divulge something we don’t want other people know, except for the friend who has been your confidant. This is also the main theme in No Exit: Hell is other people. As a result, finding someone not only we don’t’ know before but we don’t stay in touch with him/ her is a usual way to vent the affection. No matter a stranger or a psychotherapist, their function is the same: to relieve oneself. During the process of talking, people can heal themselves. Because the relationship between the speaker and the listener is weak, when they end the communication, their relationship ends, too. Nevertheless, being an audience must know rules of listening: don’t interrupt at random; don’t jump into the conclusion too early. What’s more, don’t cross-question the speaker if he/ she doesn’t want to say. Because it’s so brave that one is willing to tell other his/ her own secrets.
Cixous rewrites Dora’s story to point out that Freud violated the rule. What’s more, Cixous blames Freud used his male chauvinism to suppose arbitrarily that Dora got something wrong. Freud depends on his knowledge and tries to interpret Dora’s dream and her behaviors, but he ignores Dora’s thinking and wants to intrude Dora’s secret garden. Some images in Portrait of Dora represent Dora’s secrets. Such as “the door” (Portrait of Dora 38), “the bedroom” (45) and “the jewerlley box” (47). These two are easily associated with containers which collect the secrets. When you want to open it and know what thing there is, you usually must get the “key” to open it. If you don’t have the key but open it with the strong hand, you may be regarded as a robber or a thief. Many Characters in Portrait of Dora are searching for the “key,” especially Freud, Mr. K and Mr. B. Since they want to find out the truth through that “key” and satisfy their desire of curiosity. They don’t know Dora is not willing to be intruded by them, when Me. B and Mr. K took her to Freud, she has known that Freud is a person who is not help her but help those two men. Helping them to pry her secret in her mind, she is so smart and when Freud asks her question, she uses her talent to avoid the questions. Dora doesn’t want her secrets to be hollowed out and put under the sun. Furthermore, Dora tricks Freud that she considers Freud has known everything; she doesn’t understand why Freud still tries to discover the “truth”? Because Freud has used his knowledge and explained Dora’s dream according to his “knowledge”, there is no truth under the stereotype. It’s difficult to overturn it. As a result, Dora: “Who was that?” Freud: “Who?” Dora: “You know very well. That woman.” (51). It reflects Dora’s trick towards Freud.
There is one research express that we don’t choose memory to be remembered, but choose it to be forgotten. The memory we choose to be forgotten does not disappear but still exists in our subconscious and becomes a “secret.” Although it is impossible for one to keep all secrets in the lifetime, most of us still don’t want our secret to be discovered, especially something we hurt ourselves. Such as lies we said, the experience of breaking up with the mate and so on. During Portrait of Dora, Cixous points out the importance of the secret space in our mind. If one doesn’t maintain this garden, letting people intrude one’s garden easily, I will judge the person is out of the self-consciousness, that person is “being for others”.
